Chan-o-cha was born on the 21st March 1954 in Nakhon Ratchasima, one of Thailand’s largest agricultural producers, accounting for 50% of exports of sugar, tapioca and rice. He studied in the Armed Forces Academies Preparatory School before going on to gain a bachelor of science degree from Chulachomklao Royal Military Academy.
He served in the 21st Infantry Regiment, becoming a general in 2002 from which point he was promoted rapidly, In 2005, he became a deputy commanding general of the 1st Army, and its commanding general within a year. He was then chief of staff of the Royal Thai Army in 2008, in 2009 he being appointed honorary adjutant to the king and In 2010, he succeeding Anupong Paochinda as commander in chief.
Following the removal of Yingluck Shinawatra as premier by the Constitutional Court, Chan-o-cha became premier following a period of political instability which culminated in a coup d’état: a position he holds to this day.
