Mr. Ayala (born in Ibarra, Ecuador, 1950) has been a professor, lecturer, editor, historian, and politician. He has PhDs in both Education (1975, Catholic University of Ecuador) and Modern History (1982, Oxford University, UK). Part of Ecuador’s Socialist Party, Mr. Ayala has served as a member of Parliament and the Constituent Assembly, as Deputy of the Republic, and as Governor of the Imbabura Province. He was also the editor of 15 volumes of the New History of Ecuador (one of Ecuador’s most important publications), as well as dozens of other historical and educational works. In 1990, he joined Simón Bolivar Andean University later being appointed Rector in 1997.
